"Xavier was incredibly shy in the beginning. But, I immediately saw how talented he was after the first exercise. As the mentorship progressed, he slowly started to open up more to me, especially when he was drawing or painting.
That’s where the inspiration for ‘The Apprentice’ illustration came from. Although we come from completely different backgrounds (and generations), I felt a strong connection with him as I found his stories so relatable. So I naturally happened upon the concept of “the apprentice eventually surpasses the master”.
The big character in the illustration is a combination of a character Xavier drew repeatedly, Mr. Miyagi (Karate Kid), Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) and God (well, what I think he looks like anyway)."
